Far too many applicants have grown overly reliant on using a single, job search tool. In so doing, these applicants are not privy to a plethora of job postings that employers advertise on other platforms. Savvy job searchers know there are other job search websites besides LinkedIn that allow them to search job postings by field, position, and location.
The most common approach to submitting job applications is to fire off lots of resumes and cover letters in the hopes that eventually one of them will catch the eye of a recruiter. The problem with this approach is that candidates favor a standard application and/or resume they can use for every position and employer.
If you want to increase your chances when applying for jobs, you must get into the habit of tailoring your application to meet the needs of the position you are seeking to fill.
Think of the last organization to which you applied. Before submitting your application, did you examine those in your group of friends or professional network to consider if you knew anyone working for that company?
Do not beat yourself up if you forgot; it is a common oversight when job searching. Social media grants us a wealth of information into people’s lives, including where they work and who they know. Use that information and your network to your advantage.
Applying for a new job is stressful, and it is easy to become so distracted by the search that you can easily forgets your career goals.
The job opportunities you seek should be positions that will assist you in reaching your long term career goals.
